Bismillah,
From the arid lands of Afganistan, through migration our ancestoral roots found home in the valley of Kashmir in 15th century. Shahi-Humdans's arrival in kashmir gifted art & work to kashmir & in this blessed wave, Copper Repoussé,Naqashi & Islam became our family’s staple lifeline.
At a young age, our paternal-grandmother became a widow. The execution to the bare minimum felt impossible, but our grandmother held tight to the rope of Allah.
Surviving only on this art, Allah led our grandmother lead a family of 10 children–few found course in education & few in business.
Copper Repoussé continues to contribute to our family as a strong trunk of a tree.
Our uncles didn't stop here. They went to try new waters—Kashmiri shawl craftsmanship; finding substantial grounds in New Delhi.
While being deeply emersed in my Medical career & my brother in his Engineering field, we shared the urge to build something from scratch & had faith that Allah will provide for the one who strives.
We poured this idea to our family that lives as Paper_Machique today.
The best part is how our mother & sisters help us ideate, contributing & supporting through their creative femininity.
But nothing was hunky-dory in this journey. It took us through the lanes of self-discovery, and enough frustration, helplessness but also made us value the helping hand of brotherhood, taught us understanding and mostly living & diving deep into art. Learning about paper mache, knowing people at every stage who create paper mache, becoming familiar with their life stories & how beautifully disciplined is this field of work in terms of work & rizq.
May Allah bless this craft through us & bless our coming generations through this art! Ameen–This is our intent today, tomorrow & always.
Yours Paper Machique
